Joe Pechinsky - Dec 23, 1918 to Sept 22, 2011
On Thursday Sept. 22, 2011 our Coach Joe Pechinsky passed away at the age of 92. Joe was an incredible man who accomplished many challenges. Never for glory or bravado he was always humble.
He was a hero as a firefighter and a member of the US Navy. He fought in WW2 in the Pacific theatre and was at Pearl Harbor during the attack by Japan. Joe enjoyed the outdoors and climbed many mountains including the Matterhorn (twice). He was dedicated to his students and his students are dedicated to him. Joe brought class and character to the role of a fencing coach. Never did you see him yelling from a sideline or berating a student. Joe simply said "Do your best" and stood back with his camera in hand. Joe is a member of the Fencing Hall of Fame for developing many fencers who were members of Olympic Teams, National Champions, Pan Am Teams and World Championship Teams but Joe never fenced a single tournament in his life. Amazing!
In addition to his fencing accomplishments Joe was also an artist. His works are on display at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem and in the Peabody Court House.
Thank you Joe for 49 years of coaching, mentoring and friendship. You taught us to fence, taught us to teach and taught us to be good sports.
We know we can never walk in your shoes but we promise to "Do our best".
